ZAMARAN - My Blood Runs Red

My Blood Runs Red is the new single from Zamaran's debut EP "Authenticity" which was released September 2020. 

Authenticity draws from a range of musical influences and addresses prominent topics of the time such as feeling disenfranchised and loneliness in the digital age.

The songs have brute energy combined with a cinematic and futuristic palette of tones, where the aim was to create a gritty EP that doesn’t shy away from the realities of our time, but which provides a sense of hope amidst the uncertain political dynamic and increasingly prominent debate around mental health. 

At the heart of the EP are simple blues and country based songs, which are embellished by broad musical influences and textures that result in the Zamaran sound. 

Rhythmically, the songs are groove based, inspired by hop-hopand hip-hop influenced rock bands such as Rage Against The Machine. Matt Hiam (drums) plays with power and passion, which is inspired by the heavy rock and metal influences he is often found listening to. 

Sam Callow (bass) draws inspiration from the renowned jazz bassist Jaco Pastoriusto add a melodic yet rhymical low end that re-enforces the grooves whilst enhancing the harmonic qualities of the songs. This is most evident on the verses of Living Here’s Not Enough and Someone To Love, where high harmony notes support the underlying bass patterns.

Guitar wise, the rhythm guitar parts are predominantly 90’s grunge influenced, which are supported by cinematic lead guitar parts influenced byPink Floyd,U2, Radiohead and Coldplay. 

A key feature of the bands sound are the guitar layers which intertwine much like the musical layers found in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) production. Whilst the band is only a three piece, Keith Banwaitt (guitar/ vocals) has developed an innovative way to utilise the TC Electronic Voice live 3 Extreme effects pedal to layer guitar parts which make the band sound like a five or six piece group.When playing live, pre-recorded loops are triggered in real time, which makes the bands performance more like across between a live band and a DJ set.  

The Meaning Behind The Songs

1.My Blood Runs Red : It’s about standingup for what you believein, until the death. 

2.Control: Only 2 in 5 people think the “system”works for them. The recent #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements are also strong indicators of the imbalances which exist in our society. Control is written from the perspective of feeling disenfranchised and wanting more control over your destiny.

3.Living Here’s Not Enough: This song recognises the underlying desire for humans to want to explore. It’s about wanting to experience a life beyond what you’re used to, and was influenced in part by the recent Space X missions and the dreams they are creating.

4.Someone To Love: Technology has connected us more than we’ve ever been connected before. Yet, the feeling of loneliness is more prominent than ever.This song recognises the importance of real life interactions. Keith Banwaitt was also keen to highlight the importance of young men feeling comfortable to speakup about how they feel, with the repeating line in the breakdown section; “I am a simple man. We’ve got feelings, it’s not difficult to understand.”

5.It’s Time For Love: This song was written as Keith Banwaitt was going through a divorce, and soon after Donald Trump first entered the White House.The message is simple–prioritise love in the face of adversity, fear and uncertainty. We’re all part of one big family, the human race, and we must look out for each other.
